Protection Degrees
According to the intended use lightings have to be equipped with various protection from ingression of water, dust or solid debris.
The labelling of the Protection Class starts with the code letter IP for "Ingress Protection". Following are two code numbers which, according to IEC 60529:1989 + A1:1999 / DIN EN 60529:1991 + A1:2000, determine in the
- First number - Protection grade for shock-proof-protection and protection from inclusion
The protection of persons from contact with or approach to activ parts as well as contact with moving parts inside the housing, as well as protection for the device from ingression of solid debris - Second number - Protection grade for water protection
The protection of the operating agents inside the housing from the damaging ingression of water
and are established according to international unitarily defined testing procedures
| First number |
|
| Second number |
0 | unprotected from debris |
| 0 | unprotected from moisture |
1 | protected from solid debris larger than 50 mm |
| 1 | protected from drip water |
2 | protected from solid debris larger than 12 mm |
| 2 | protected from drip water below 15° (housing inclination) |
3 | protected from solid debris larger than 2,5 mm |
| 3 | protected from spray water up to 60° (housing inclination) |
4 | protected from solid debris larger than 1 mm |
| 4 | protected from splash water |
5 | dustproof (ingression of dust not impossible) |
| 5 | protected from jet water |
6 | dust-tight (no ingression of dust) |
| 6 | protected from rough sea |
|
| 7 | protected from immersion (with details about pressure and time) | |
|
| 8 | protected from submerging (with manufactures indications) |
Examples Advanced Protective System
IP65 = dust-tight and protected from jet water
IP66 = dust-tight and protected from rough sea
IP67 = dust-tight and protected from immersion
