General information on lamps

Different lamp types can also be identified on the basis of their diameter and their length (as well as their power consumption). T numbers always indicate the diameter of the lamp. European lamp manufacturers indicate lamp dimensions mainly in millimeters; however, the initial measuring system originates from the United States and describes lamp diameters with a multiple of 1/8 inch as a measuring unit. (1/8 of 25.4 mm = 3.18 mm). Thus, a T5 lamp has a diameter of 5/8 inches, which corresponds to approx. 16 mm.

Fluorescent lamp diameters:

T2 =   approx.   7 mm lamp diameter
T3 =   approx.   9 mm lamp diameter
T4 =   approx. 13 mm lamp diameter
T5 =   approx. 16 mm lamp diameter
T8 =   approx. 26 mm lamp diameter
T9 =   approx. 30 mm lamp diameter
T12 = approx. 38 mm lamp diameter
