Company history - A brand is born

The company is founded by plastics engineer Joseph Reiss (1894 – 1958) in Tettnang in southern Germany. Numerous products for the rapidly growing aviation industry (Dornier, Zeppelin) are manufactured with great success.

Shortly after invention of polycarbonate (PC) in 1953, the first moisture-proof luminaire made from this material is launched. The product is the result of joint development work of the lighting entrepreneurs (and friends) Joseph Reiss and Dr. Walter Zumtobel.

The successful REISS company is taken over by the Austrian Zumtobel Group. The company’s presence in the international luminaire industry is continuously expanded.

Reiss Lighting, alongside the well-known Zumtobel, Thorn and Tridonic brands, is a member of the Zumtobel Group. The way the Group is organised and its worldwide production and logistics network provide an ideal platform for maximising synergies in development, production and procurement. All our business activities are geared towards our customers' market requirements.

Nearly 90 years of solid experience in processing high-quality plastic materials as well as manufacturing and marketing luminaires with higher protection make REISS a globally well-renowned partner in the industry.
